San Diego Chapter of the Fulbright Association

News & Updates

Virtual events, a new blog, and more

Our local chapter is staying busy and planning virtual events that we hope to share with you soon. We will be establishing a SD Chapter Zoom account, funded through our national office, for our programs and virtual connections with alumni, grantees, and friends from the community. We’ve also applied to a local grant that we hope will allow us to initiate more cross-border projects, work with local indigenous communities, and implement a buddy system with new Fulbright grantees arriving in San Diego.

We also wanted to let you know that we are increasing our social media presence and have started a new blog for sharing Fulbright stories. Please consider sharing your Fulbright profile by writing a blog post/a paragraph or two about your Fulbright experience that we can post here.

Dr. Maya Kalyanpur (USD): Education in Post-Colonial Contexts (India)

Dr. Maya Kalyanpur (USD): Education in Post-Colonial Contexts (India)

Maya Kalyanpur (Fulbright 2017-18) with her group of students from the University of San Diego and students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences visiting a Bombay Municipal School, Mumbai, India, as part of a travel course on Education in Post-Colonial Contexts. The course was a direct outcome of the connections Maya had made during her Fulbright fellowship.

Dr. Maya Kalyanpur, Fulbright Flex Research grant awardee (2017-2018) and Professor, Department of Learning and Teaching, University of San Diego, took a group of ten doctoral and master’s students from the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at USD on a travel course to India in January 2020. The course, titled EDUC 579i: Education in Post-Colonial Contexts (India), was a direct outcome of her Fulbright research study and the connections she made through her institute of affiliation, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) at Mumbai, India. The course was structured in collaboration with TISS. For an authentic immersion experience, the USD students stayed at the visitors’ guesthouse on campus and connected with five TISS doctoral and master’s students before and during the program. The group visited colleges, schools and education-based agencies that Maya had engaged with during her fellowship to experience the range of the education system, from preschool to higher education and from municipal to private, elite schools, and learn about the complexities of post-colonial legacies.
