Voting rights are important to all Americans. This webinar focuses on current issues in California. Panelists include:

• Thad Kousser- Department Chair and Professor, Political Science, UC San Diego
• Jonathan Mehta Stein– Executive Director, California Common Cause
• Jeanne Weidner– Chair of Speakers Bureau, San Diego League of Women Voters

Challenges to our democracy during the past year in the forms of mis- and disinformation, gerrymandering, and voter suppression will be covered along with a discussion on the progress California has made to build a more accessible democracy, including details on landmark laws that make access to voter registration and voting easier, and data showing whether or not those reforms have really made a difference.

Additionally, drawing on data from the UC San Diego Yankelovich Center Survey on Recall Reform, we will discuss what voters thought about the recall process this year and what the prospects are for reform over the next year.

Purpose: The San Diego Chapter of Fulbright Association (SDCFA) will initiate a pilot project: Global Friendship Program in 2021/2022. The goal is to connect new Fulbright students and scholars within the San Diego region with local community hosts for friendship and support. 

Overview: 

San Diego is the destination for 20-40 international grantees each year that are hosted by the multiple universities and institutions within our community. As you recall your Fulbright experience, it was filled with endless application papers and waiting for acceptance as a grantee.  When the letter/email arrived, the excitement, planning of travel, and ongoing communication with your host institution continued. Then you arrived at your destination in a new nation and you had to find a place to live and get settled for the extent of your grant period. Perhaps you had assistance in locating available housing or learned the community on foot when looking for a residence. Regardless, you had to locate grocery stores, restaurants, transportation availability and how to link for a TV or the internet or other communication methods in your new home. I am sure the internet makes these tasks much easier than for those of us who were ‘early’ or ‘pre-internet’ grantees.

It is our hope that the Global Friendship Program will become a ‘welcome mat’ for these grantees to our San Diego community and extend our friendship to our international Fulbright colleagues. This program is not intended to provide housing, and there are no legal or financial obligations. Hosts simply meet up with their assigned Fulbright grantees for conversation. We hope that friendships will continue beyond program end, and we believe participating in this program will be a rewarding experience for alumni and grantees.

We are reaching out to the Fulbright Alumni residing in the San Diego community to offer an opportunity to:

1. Join the pilot program as community hosts

2. Volunteer as members of the new Chapter/Community Committee to be established. This committee will manage the pilot project and the Global Friendship Program

Committee:  Membership: 1-2 members of SDCFA Board of Directors and 2-3 Fulbright Alumni. This committee will be part of the chapter’s outreach projects. Currently the Chapter members are Rosemary Goodyear and Maria Ledesma-Carbayo.

Scope of Committee Work: The committee will establish a meeting schedule and determine how to – 1) reach out to alumni and grantees 2) orient hosts and grantees 3) supervise and expand the pilot project 4) evaluate and provide recommendations to the San Diego Chapter Board of Directors

Dr. Carlson is a Guinness World Record holder, educator, scientist, coach and ultra-endurance athlete with more than 15 years of experience in higher education and adventure around the world. As Assistant  professor of Anthropology at Purdue University, he studied the dietary environment of wild chimpanzees in Sub-Saharan Africa and applied those insights into the study of human evolution. He has also pursued a passion for exploration and personal transformation in the world of ultramarathon running and rowing. As of 2021, Carlson has completed more than 150 marathons and 25 ultramarathons, including a 3,100-mile stage  race from Los Angeles to  Washington, DC, and a World Record Breaking solo unsupported row across the North Atlantic Ocean.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Dra. Ietza Rocio Bojórquez Chapela

Dr. Bojorquez is an epidemiologist and a public health specialist. Her main research interest is on the social determinants of health, in the areas of mental health, health-related practices (diet, physical activity) and migrant health.

After graduating from medical school, she worked in health promotion in rural areas in Mexico. From 2007 to 2010 she was Deputy Director of Operations Research in Mexico’s Ministry of Health. From 2010 on, she has been a professor-researcher at the Department of Population Studies, El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Mexico, where she is currently in charge of the Surveys of Migration in Mexico’s Borders (EMIF).

Her recent research projects include “Prevalence and factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, HIV and latent tuberculosis, among migrants in Tijuana, Mexico”, “Mental health and trajectories of reintegration of young return migrants”, “Public spaces and physical activity in cities in Northern Mexico”, “Feasibility study of a cellphone-based intervention to promote mental health among deported migrants”, and “Participatory Development of a Health Promotion Intervention to Improve Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Practices in an Underserved Community”.

Vicente Calderón

With more than 30 years practicing journalism on both sides of the Mexico-U.S border, Vicente Calderón has a unique perspective on the dynamic and complex border region.

Today we talk about the new phenomenon of “All Terrain” reporters, but Calderón has a long career that has evolved with the development of multimedia platforms.

Calderón started in radio in Tijuana and has accumulated experience and knowledge in Los Angeles as a TV news anchor as well as in San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico, first as a reporter and today as editor of Tijuana’s first online news site, Tijuanapress.com.  Tijuanapress.com is dedicated to the professional training and development of journalists and to the promotion and defense of freedom of expression on both sides of the border.

He has developed news in English and Spanish, producing for CBS News and ITN of England or Al Jazeera America, as well serving as a correspondent for mexican national media such as Milenio TV.

Calderón help launch Newsweek en Español Baja California as editorial coordinator.  He left  that post in May 2018 due to a renewed interest from several international media outlets on stories about Tijuana and an increased demand of Tijuanapress.com services.

Vicente Calderon is a graduate of the School of clinical Psychology of CETYS Universidad from Tijuana, Mexico.

Alfredo Corchado

Alfredo Corchado is the Mexico Border correspondent for the Dallas Morning News and author of Midnight in Mexico: A Reporter’s Journey Through a Country’s Descent into Darkness. Born in Durango, Mexico, he was raised in California and Texas. He worked the fields of California’s San Joaquin Valley alongside his parents who were members of the United Farm Workers union led by Cesar Chavez. Corchado began his career in journalism at the El Paso Herald-Post, before working for the Wall Street Journal in 1987. He is a 2009 Nieman at Harvard and also a fellow at Woodrow Wilson, Rockefeller, Lannan, USMEX and IOP. He is a recipient of the Maria Moors Cabot Prize from Columbia University in 2007.

In 2009, he received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for Courage in Journalism from Colby College. He has reported on the reach of Mexican drug cartels into the United States, the plight of Mexican and Central American immigrants in the U.S. and government corruption on both sides of the border and debate about immigration. The former director of the Borderlands Program at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University, Corchado was also inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2018. He was named 2020 Justice Media Trailblazer by John Jay College and Texas’ Star Reporter of Year.

Dr. James Gerber

Dr. James Gerber is retired from San Diego State University where he taught economics for 34 years.  He successfully served as SDSU’s Director of the Center for Latin American Studies (2002-2009) and obtained federal grants designating it as a National Resource Center for Latin America.  Among his other works, he is the author of the widely used textbook International Economics and co-author of the economic history Fifty Years of Change on the US-Mexico Border.  His recent book, A Great Deal of Ruin:  Financial Crises since 1929 was published by Cambridge University Press in 2019.  He has been a visiting professor in universities in Canada and Mexico.
