A symposium on language reclamation strategies, featuring talks from local Indigenous scholars and community members.

The San Diego Chapter of the Fulbright Association co-organized the first Symposium on the Indigenous Language Communities of the Californias (SILCC) which was held at UC San Diego on November 21, 2019. With over 100 attendees, this full day event featured indigenous perspectives about the current status of languages in the region and the efforts underway to preserve and reclaim them for future generations. Perspectives of the Kumeyaay, Kumiai, Cahuilla, Cupeño and Luiseño tribal communities of Southern California and Baja California and their experiences with language reclamation work in their communities were among those represented.

UN declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL), with the message “Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation”.
