We are happy to invite you to the first Symposium on the Indigenous Language Communities of the Californias (SILCC) at UCSD. UN declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL), with the message “Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation”. With this as a backdrop, please join us to learn about the linguistic heritage of our region, enjoy complimentary lunch, and connect with colleagues, scholars from the local academic institutions and tribal communities.

The event will feature presentations by Native American scholars and local community members. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion about how to create lasting impacts of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, based on the perspectives of the local tribal communities and their experiences with language reclamation work.

The symposium is complimentary and open to the public.

The event is co-organized by the UC San Diego Department of Linguistics and the San Diego Chapter of the Fulbright Association, and sponsored by Global Education and the Intertribal Resource Center.
